60% Peach Orchard
“He had an orneriness year-round, but especially in the summer, when he worked his peach orchards daylight to dusk.” Page 3
T. Ray works constantly and seems to care more about his peaches than he does about his daughter. The peaches bring in money and so he focuses more on that than anything else.
15% Snout
“His only kindness was for Snout, hid bird dog, who slept in his bed and got her stomach scratched anytime she rolled onto her back.” Page 3
Snout is the only living creature that T. Ray appears to love and treats kindly. He treats this dog better than his daughter and at one point he even took food out of Lily’s hand and gave it to Snout instead.
10% Lily
“Lileeee!” he shouted, and I saw his shadow plunge towards me across the ground.” Page23
Although T. Ray doesn’t think fondly of Lily he still thinks about her. He has to because he still has to take care of her.
15% Anger
“Now I looked at his face. It was despising and full of anger.” Page 26
T. Ray is rough with Lily and acts aggressively and angry towards her. This is probably due to the fact that Lily killed his wife. Although it was on accident it is obvious that he is still angry about something and that inhibits him from loving Lily like he should

65% Mom
"That night I lay in bed and thought about dying and going to be with my mother in paradise." Page 3
Lily has missed her mom from the age of four and wants to be with her. She really wants to see her mom to forgive her because she feels guilty about her death. Lily also wants to get to know her mom and wants an answer to her biggest question: does my mom love me?
5% Family
"Rosaleen had worked for us since my mother died. My daddy- who I called T. Ray because "Daddy" never fit him- had pulled her out of the peach orchard, where she'd worked as one of his pickers." Page 2
Lily has never had a full understanding of family; however, with the help of T. Ray, she is able to take the people around her and try to make the loving family she desires.
10% Bees
"At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzzz that hummed along my skin." Page 1
Lily has slowly become interested in the little things among her everyday life. She always looks at the interaction with the world around her and how they survive.
5% Looks and Appearances
"I worried so much about how I looked and whether I was doing things right, I felt half the time I was impersonating a girl instead of really being one." Page 9
Lily has always lived with T. Ray without her mother. She takes guilt on her mother's death and is only trying to fit in.
15% Reading and Writing
"It took me a month to get over the shock of having life possibilities... I planned to be a professor and a writer of actual books." Page 9
Lily never realized how far reading and writing could take her in life especially when T. Ray disapproves reading and writing.
